ILP permits and entry logistics: this comes before everything
Arunachal Pradesh is an Inner Line Permit state, and the permit is non-negotiable before entry. Indian nationals can apply online at arunachalilp.com — the process takes 24 to 48 hours and the permit must be printed and carried throughout the trip. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) and Restricted Area Permit (RAP) in addition to an ILP; the process is more involved and requires applying through a registered tour operator at least four weeks in advance. The standard entry point for the Tawang circuit is Bhalukpong, where the ILP is checked on the bridge crossing into the state. Ensure your permit lists Tawang specifically as the destination, not just West Kameng district.
Day 1–2: Bhalukpong to Dirang, acclimatising on the way
Bhalukpong sits at 213 metres above sea level; Tawang is at 3,048 metres. Driving straight through in one day is a common mistake that causes altitude sickness. The itinerary we run stops in Dirang (1,560 metres) for the first night, which gives the body a gentle step-up. Dirang is a small, pleasant village in the Kameng river valley, surrounded by apple orchards that are spectacular in spring (March to April) and harvest season (September to October). Mandala Farmstay and Hotel Pemaling are good mid-range options. On the drive from Bhalukpong to Dirang (6–7 hours), stop at Bomdila for lunch and visit the Bomdila Monastery; the town has views back into the Assam plains that make it worth the 30-minute detour.
Day 3: Sela Pass and the descent into Tawang
The drive from Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass is 100 kilometres and takes 5 to 6 hours. Leave by 6 AM to clear the pass before afternoon fog and potential snowfall, which can close the road without warning. Sela Pass at 4,170 metres is the journey's highest point; Para Lake beside it freezes solid in winter and reflects the sky in October. The pass is cold even in May — carry a warm layer regardless of the season. The descent from Sela into the Tawang valley is one of the most extraordinary drives in India: 40 kilometres of hairpin turns through cloud forest until the valley opens and you see Tawang Monastery's ochre walls against the ridge. Check into your hotel before 4 PM; altitude headaches are common on the first night in Tawang.
