Season and park access: November to April only
Kaziranga National Park closes every year during monsoon season, typically from May to October, when the Brahmaputra floods large sections of the park and wildlife disperses to the Karbi Anglong hills to the south. The park reopens in November and the best wildlife density is December through March, when the tall elephant grass has been trimmed by seasonal burning and animals concentrate near the remaining water bodies. April is the last month before closure and offers the hottest temperatures but also the most dramatic landscapes as the grass burns. Book jeep safaris well in advance for December and January, which are peak tourist months.
The three main zones: Central, Western, and Eastern
Kaziranga is divided into four ranges; the three most accessible to visitors are the Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), and Eastern (Agoratoli) ranges. The Central Range is the most visited and offers the highest rhino density — it is the range most frequently photographed and the one to prioritise if you have only one safari. The Western Range is excellent for elephant herds and has more open grassland; tiger sightings here are relatively more frequent than in the Central Range. The Eastern Range sees far fewer tourists and offers a genuinely wilder experience, with large water buffalo herds and excellent birdwatching along the Aie River. Book the Central Range for your first visit; add Western or Eastern if you have additional days.
Jeep safari vs elephant safari: the real difference
Jeep safaris and elephant safaris serve fundamentally different purposes in Kaziranga. The morning jeep safari (departing at sunrise, around 5:30–6:00 AM depending on season) covers more ground — up to 20 kilometres through the park — and gives you sustained time with a wide variety of animals. Elephant safaris are 45-minute rides on trained park elephants that take you into tall grass where jeeps cannot go, often getting you within 20 metres of rhinos in ways that would be impossible otherwise. The elephant safari is a unique experience but covers very little ground. Both are worth doing if your schedule allows; most repeat Kaziranga visitors describe the elephant safari as the more intimate encounter but the jeep safari as the more complete wildlife experience.
