Tawang sits at 3,048 m in the far north-western corner of Arunachal Pradesh, hemmed in by the McMahon Line and the great wall of the Eastern Himalayas. The Tawang Monastery — Asia's largest Buddhist monastery after Lhasa's Potala — commands a ridge above the town and sets the spiritual tone for the entire region. Glacial lakes, war memorials, high mountain passes, and the warm Monpa Buddhist culture make this one of India's most rewarding and least-visited destinations.
A glimpse of the landscapes you'll travel through.
Yes — all visitors (Indian and foreign nationals) require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang. Our tour package obtains the ILP on your behalf before departure.
March to June offers blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain views; September and October bring crisp skies post-monsoon. Sela Pass may be closed by heavy snow from December to February.
The nearest airport is Tezpur (TEZ) in Assam, about 325 km away via Sela Pass (10–12 hours by road). Guwahati is also a common starting point. There is no railway to Tawang; road travel is the only option.
