Ziro Valley in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh is one of the oldest inhabited valleys in North East India, home to the Apatani tribe whose integrated rice-fish cultivation system has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. Pine forests ring the flat plateau at 1,700 m, and the Apatani villages of Hari, Hong, and Bamin are living museums of a society that practised sustainable agriculture centuries before the term existed. The Ziro Music Festival each September adds a contemporary creative layer to this ageless landscape.
A glimpse of the landscapes you'll travel through.
Yes — Ziro is in Arunachal Pradesh, which requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all Indian nationals and a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign nationals. Our package arranges permits before your departure.
September and October offer golden harvest-season rice fields and coincide with the Ziro Music Festival. March to May brings clear skies and blooming orchids. The monsoon (June–August) makes roads difficult.
Lilabari Airport (IXI) near North Lakhimpur in Assam is the nearest airport (100 km from Ziro). Buses and shared taxis connect to the valley. Alternatively, drive from Itanagar (115 km). Our tours include all transfers.
